Let’s Talk About Text – Websites, Blogs, Emails, Etc.
When you’re preparing digital content for your viewers to read – whether it’s in the form of a website, blog, email, or more – it’s important to catch and keep their attention. While having a hook and creating content they’ll want to read are key parts of this, another key is your typography, or how your text is formatted.
Let’s talk about a few ways you can format your text to help your content more easily appeal to your viewers:
1. Use headings and subheadings in different font sizes to organize your content visually. Creating visual sections to guide your audience will not only help keep their attention, but it can help them from getting lost while reading and also to find the specific content they’re looking for.
2. Create space between sections of your content. Leaving space between segments is also important to helping guide your readers through your content. This can be achieved in paragraphs, but also page breaks, which add even more space between sections of your content. Between headings and subheadings, we recommend utilizing these to establish visual breaks for your readers.
3. Avoid using ALL CAPS in the body of your content. While capitals are great for emphasis, they’re not as easy to read. Try to use them sparingly, in your headings and subheadings, while avoiding frequent use in the body of your content.
4. Utilize bold, underlined, and italicized text for emphasis. These methods of creating emphasis are easier to read, so they’re great for not only your headings, but for use within the main body of your text. Breaking up paragraphs with the occasional emphasis will improve your viewers’ ability to read.
