Google’s Responsive Announcement

Starting April 21st, Google will be using mobile-friendliness as a ranking signal. Currently, being mobile-friendly will not have a ranking benefit, but Google will be labeling search results by adding a “mobile-friendly” label to sites that are.

While website owners have options on how to address mobile friendliness, Google has stated that they feel having a responsive website is an industry best practice. Responsive means using a technique that allows a website to adapt to the size of screen it’s being viewed on. Here are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Responsive sites work well across existing devices on the market and are easily adaptable to new device sizes.
  • Faster, smarter user experience. Optimizing your site, so that no it may be seen easily no matter the user device makes life easier and provides a great user experience across all devices and screen sizes.
  • Cost effective. Responsive sites initially take a little longer to build. However, the unified approach means management, support and upgrades only need be applied in one place which saves money and time long term.
