Interesting Facts About Server Security

One of a system administrator’s worst nightmares is having their servers hacked or crashed. Have you ever wondered why many hack attempts happen overnight? Just picture it – you wake up in the morning to find that your website is down, even though it was fine the night before.

There are two main reasons why this happens.

  1. Many hackers and botnets are located overseas, in timezones that coincide with nighttime hours in the U.S.
  2. Many hackers purposely target businesses overnight, as they know it’s less likely that an admin is on staff monitoring the server.

Pretty sneaky and genius, right?  Why not attack a target when you know their defenses are weakened?  If you were a hacker, would you attack a website when you know there is an admin available to stop you?  Or would you wait until it was more likely that the admin was unavailable?

At i3, we monitor our systems very carefully.  We have found that most hack attempts do indeed happen overnight, and just this past Christmas we saw a 10x increase in intrusion attempts to our sites.  Hackers know that it’s very likely that system admins are not working over the Christmas holiday, and this is a perfect opportunity for them to do their dirty work.
